The Bhagvad Gita – Chapter 17 – The power of faith

This article is taken from Guru30's blog. You can access the full write up here. It's good read to understand a little about hinduism. The Bhagvad Gita – Chapter 17 – The Power of Faith:

---Start of Article ---
Arjuna asks this question to Lord SriKrishna: “Those who disregard the scriptures, but worship according to their faith, are they in the mode of goodness (sattva), passion (rajasica) or ignorance (tamasica)? “ And the Lord of Sri replies thus : One acquires certain kind of faith depending on the modes of nature. A living entity is said to be of a particular faith, depending on what he/she had acquired. The sattvic worship the gods, the rajasic demons and the tamasic worship ghost and spirits. Those who are engaged in severe austerities, not recommended by the scriptures, but do so out of pride, lust and attachment torture themselves and me who is inside them. They are considered demons.

Even the food that a person consumes has a quality to it. Thus the sattvic consume wholesome juicy foods, the rajasic consume food that is spicy and the tamasic consume foods that are stale. Sacrifices performed as per scriptural directions, out of a sense of duty, without thinking of a reward, are in the realm of goodness. However, those sacrifices performed for acquiring material benefit or for the sake of pride are in the realm of passion. And those that are performed not in line with spiritual injunctions, done without distributing the food offering, without Vedic chants and without remuneration to the presiding priests is in the mode of ignorance.

Austerities of the body include purity, straightforwardness, non-violence, celibacy and worship of God, the spiritual master and the wise ones. Speech that is pure, truthful, purposeful, beneficial and which does not cause distress is said to be austere in speech. Satisfaction, peace of mind, silence, purity of thought is considered to be austerities of the mind. The three fold austerities performed with transcendental faith without hankering after results is said to be in the mode of goodness. Austerity taken out of pride for the sake of material and sensory results is in the mode of passion and is unsteady and fleeting. Austerities performed out of imprudence, which troubles the Self, or the others, is in the mode of ignorance.

The syllable ‘Om Tat Sat’ is indicative of the supreme Brahman. Prior to any sacrifice, you must chant ‘Om’ in accordance with spiritual injunctions to attain the Supreme. Those who want to be liberated from material attachments must chant ‘Tat’ while undertaking any austerity. Finally the syllable ‘Sat’ is indicative of reality and goodness. Sat also strengthens the act of sacrifice, austerity and charity and all acts performed within this mind are also ‘Sat’. Acts of sacrifice, austerity or charity performed without faith are called ‘asat’, hence not beneficial. Remember ‘Om Tat Sat’ and chant along with your dedication without any impure thought and you will surely reach me.

Om Tat Sat

From The Secret - fair exchange

Incorporating the rule of fair exchange in your life is living the law of attraction.
Be sure that you always give fair exchange in business and in your personal life. In business, always give more value than the money you receive. In your personal life, always give back what you have received. If you have received support from others at a time when you needed it, and then someone asks for your support, be sure to give back the support you have received. All support comes to you through the Universe, and so when you give support back you are giving back to the Universe.
This is living according to the rule of fair exchange, and it is living the law of attraction.

The Bhagvad Gita - Chapter 16 - The fallen people

This article is taken from Guru30's blog. You can access the full write up here. It's good read to understand a little about hinduism. The Bhagvad Gita – Chapter 16 – The Fallen People:

---Start of Article ---
The supreme being (Lord SriKrishna) says this further: Fearlessness, purity of heart, cultivation of spiritual knowledge, charity, sense control, sacrifice, non-violence, truthfulness, renunciation, absence of anger, tranquility, courage, forgiveness, cleanliness, freedom from hatred, modesty, determination, compassion, freedom from greed are some of the things that those with divine nature are endowed with.

Pride, arrogance, conceit, anger, harsh speech and ignorance are the qualities of demonic people. Do not grieve Arjuna, because you are born with divine qualities. I have described to you the divine qualities fairly in detail. Now listen from me about the demoniac people – the ungodly :-

Those of demoniac nature don’t know how to act and how not to act. Neither good behavior, nor cleanliness, nor good behavior is found in them. They describe the world as a big illusion. Attached to insatiable lust and absorbed in false prestige and pride due to lack of discrimination, the ungodly adopt impure vows attracted by the transient.

They are busy in satisfying sensory desires through illegal means (they acquire money for this) for the purpose of sense gratification. They have a thinking that they are the enjoyers and that they are successful, powerful and happy. Hence they must be God. They also think that with the wealth hoarded they can perform sacrifices, give charity and rejoice. Nothing could be further from the truth.

They who become deeply attached to sensory activities then fall into hell. Conceited, stubborn, proud and deluded by wealth, they perform superficial sacrifices not as per vedic injunctions. Those who are envious and wicked, who are the lowest among the men, I cast them back into the ocean of material existence. Whereas, those who have escaped the three gates of hell , (anger, greed and lust) slowly make progress towards me. One who discards spiritual rules, neither attains perfecton, nor happiness. One must truly understand the meaning of duty and perform it in the right spirit, to come to me.

The Bhagvad Gita - Chapter 15 - The Secret

This article is taken from Guru30's blog. You can access the full write up here. It's good read to understand a little about hinduism. The Bhagvad Gita – Chapter 15 – The Secret:

---Start of Article ---

Lord SriKrishna says this further: It is said that there is a banyan tree with its roots growing upwards and branches downwards, whose leaves are the Vedic hymns. One who knows this tree knows Vedas. The tree’s branches extends downwards and spread above as a result of the three modes of nature, and the twigs are the sense objects. The roots are bound to fruitive actions of the human society.

No one can really understand this tree. But one must cut down this strong tree with the weapon of detachment. And then one must seek higher places and surrender to the Supreme personality. Those who are free from pride, illusion and false attachment and they who are free from dualities attain the eternal kingdom.

The supreme abode of mine is not illumined by Sun, Moon or Fire. Those who reach it never return to the material world. The individual soul in this world is an eternal fragment of myself. Just as the wind carries the fragrance from one place to another, the living entity carries the soul from one body to another. The ignorant being does not understand this.

But the enlightened person can clearly see this. The radiance of the Sun, Moon and Fire have their source in me.  I’m seated in everyone’s hearts; knowledge, remembrance and forgetfulness all come through me. I alone can be known through the Vedas. I’m the compiler of the Vedanta and the knower of the Vedas.

In this world there are fallible and infallible people. The former are material beings while the latter are spiritual in nature. Besides this there is a higher reality called the supreme soul.  Because I’m transcendental , beyond both fallible and infallible, the world celebrates me as the supreme person. Whoever is not deluded knows this and engages in devotional service to me. I have taught you this secret and remember – whoever understands this becomes wise and all his/her endeavors will be perfect.

Wishes,

From The Secret - a method to stop negative thoughts

Here is a way to stop negative thoughts: Focus your mind on your heart. Breathe in deeply, keeping your focus on your heart. Really concentrate on feeling love in your heart. Breathe out holding your focus on your heart and feeling the love in your heart. Repeat this a total of seven times.
When you do this correctly, you will feel a very big difference in your mind and your whole body. You will feel more peaceful, you will feel lighter, and you will have stopped those negative thoughts.

Do we give fish or the fishing rod? (updated)

We know many people who say they want to change their lives but they have obstacles that prevent them from doing so. The obstacles they have can be no money, no time, no education etc..

But are these really it? While some people may be really bogged down by genuine problems, I do believe that all they need to find is a reason big enough to motivate them, whether by pain or pleasure, to take the necessary actions to make changes in their lives, and they will then do it. Most people on the other hand give up on the slightest difficulty or keep looking for shortcuts.

I'm going to speak from my own personal experience here. I have at one time many years ago tried to help some one change his life. He was a high flying luxury car salesman prior to the 1997 crash. After the crash he lost his expensive BMW, house and fell on hard times. I met him a couple of years later and took it upon myself to help this person change his life. But time and again he kept giving excuses as to why he can't do this or that. The pinnacle came when I "joint-ventured" with him to start a car trading business since that was his forte. It went well for a while. However, when repossessors came for his personal car that he so cleverly hid from them (he actually managed to hide it quite well considering the time it took for them to find this car compared with 3 of his previous ones), he took the money that was meant for the business to pay the repossessors. That merely delayed repossession for a couple of months. I found out within that period and he came clean with me only after I confronted him. Well enough is enough. I decided that I couldn't help this guy anymore after 3 years with him. I walked away. The very next day the repossessors came again and he called asking for money. I told him "no" and that he has to learn to solve his problems instead of looking for handouts. I told him that the money I put into our JV business (he didn't have to put up any money) was actually eventually for him once the business gets established on a firm foot. He said thank you but still asked for money to solve his problem. I said this time it's final. No means no. He turned ugly and scolded me over the phone. I never heard from him ever since until a few years later when his wife called and said he has passed away from a heart attack. Now in refection, it really made me wonder. Sometimes there are some of us who out of compassion and goodwill attempt to help others but do they really want our help? Or do they just want handouts from us?

I know I am not the only one who have gone through this. I know of a very benevolent lady who is already successful. Both she and her husband are self made multi-millionaires and they got their datukship for bringing Malaysia's name to the world in the F&B industry, earning one Michelin Star. Anyway, now that she is already successful she also wants to help others, sometimes with fish, sometimes with fishing rods. I do not know her criteria for handing either one out but I suppose she may look at a person's character and maybe even age as a criteria. I am not saying she's right. Like I said, I do not know the criteria. You can call her an angel (or "white knight" if you prefer). Although I do not know her well enough nor long enough, from what I have seen, she clearly wants to help her husband's siblings and their children change for the better. However from what I have observed, some of them don't really want to change. What they really want are handouts. Well.. perhaps she gave fish once too often and so they kept expecting fish all the time. There was an instance when she asked her nephew to help out at her newly opened cafe with the intention of eventually teaching him the "tricks of the trade" and perhaps even passing the biz to him. However the young chap, after only 2 weeks decided that he wasn't learning anything apart from sweeping floors and other menial work and so he resigned. When I heard this, even I became disappointed. In my view, he was being tested and taught from the most basic up. But being shortsighted he cannot understand this. He has missed a great opportunity. We all saw the original karate kid in the 1980s right? The character Daniel-san (played by Ralph Macchio) was told that he would be taught karate but on his first day at the sensei's house he was told to paint the fence and to paint only in a certain way... much to his disappointment.

In my opinion perhaps this is where personal development comes in. If a person's context is small i.e. cup so small, it's just not possible for that person to recognize an opportunity when it comes. If Pat Morita's character did not physically show Ralph Macchio's Daniel-san why he is being instructed to paint the fence in an up and down hand movement manner, Daniel-san would have missed the opportunity to learn from a great master and realize his dreams. But how many teachers in real life are like the sensei who would be willing to show or let alone tell the potential student why he is being asked to do things in a certain way?

Some people argue or have the opinion that we should sometimes give the fish especially in times of real need. But really... it that so? What would be the cut-off point then? You give fish once, they will ask for fish again the next time. They will not learn. They will still wait to the last minute to do things, sometimes at their own peril. And then... again, ask for fish. So really... Do we give fish or the fishing rod? When do we give the fish? When do we give the fishing rod?

I really don't know. But... I have decided that I will NEVER give fish. I will only give the fishing rod, with a bit of "instruction manual" perhaps but most certainly no spoon feeding. When we give fish once too often, it would almost always lead to abuse. Malaysia as a country is a typical example where giving fish big time leads to massive abuse and incompetence, its clear that it just doesn't work at all.
